About NAIS

The national association for the supplementing profession.

The National Association of Insurance Supplementors is a not-for-profit professional association for the people who prepare, document, and submit supplemental estimates on property insurance claims in the United States.

Who we are

The profession

When a roof or a home is damaged by wind, hail, or water, the carrier’s initial adjustment is a starting point. Hidden damage, code-required upgrades, manufacturer specifications, and items the first inspection missed have to be documented and priced before the repair can be completed and paid for. The professionals who do that work are insurance supplementors.

Supplementing has grown into a distinct discipline with its own firms, software, training, and career paths. It sits at the center of how residential property claims are resolved and involves contractors, homeowners, carriers, and regulators in every state.

NAIS defines good practice for the profession, verifies the people who meet it, and represents them when the rules that govern their work are being written.

Mission

Our mission

To advance the practice of insurance supplementing through professional standards, education, and compliance, so that property claims are documented accurately, policyholders receive the full benefit of their policies, and contractors are paid fairly for the work a loss requires.

Vision

Our vision

A property claims system in which the supplementor is recognized by contractors, carriers, and regulators as a verified professional whose documentation can be trusted, and in which the rules governing that work are clear and consistent in every state.

What we stand for

Our principles

These principles guide the association’s decisions and are written into the Code of Professional Conduct that every member signs.

Fairness for the policyholder

A homeowner is entitled to a repair that restores the property to pre-loss condition, to code, with the materials the manufacturer requires. Accurate supplementing is how that happens.

Fair payment for the contractor

A contractor should not have to choose between doing the job right and getting paid for it. A properly documented supplement closes the gap between the initial estimate and the cost of a compliant repair.

Compliance

Supplementing is lawful, valuable work when it stays on the documentation side of the line that state public adjusting laws draw. Members know that line and do not cross it.

Integrity

The profession’s credibility rests on the accuracy of its estimates. Inflated scope and unsupported line items harm the policyholder, the contractor, and every other supplementor.

Respect for the carrier adjuster

The adjuster on the other side of a supplement is a professional with a job to do. Clear documentation and prompt responses resolve claims faster than conflict.

A career, not a stopgap

Supplementing is a profession with its own body of knowledge, continuing education, and community of peers.
