NAIS represents the professionals who document and supplement property insurance claims on behalf of contractors. Members are held to a Code of Professional Conduct and are listed in a public registry of Verified Members.
Supplementing is specialized work. It touches the contractor, the homeowner, the carrier, and the state regulator on every claim. NAIS gives the people who do that work a shared standard, a credential, and a voice.
The rules every member follows for how a supplement is prepared, documented, and submitted, and where documentation ends and claim representation begins.
Every member is reviewed by the Board, agrees to the Code, and is listed in a public registry that contractors, homeowners, and carriers can check.

Membership in NAIS requires agreement to the Code. It is the basis of Verified Member status and of the association’s disciplinary process.
A supplement reflects the work the loss requires, at the prevailing published rate. Each line item is supported by a photo, a measurement, a code citation, or a manufacturer specification.
Members do not inflate scope, duplicate line items, misstate damage, or submit documentation they know to be inaccurate.
Members follow the public adjusting, contractor licensing, and unfair claims laws of every state in which they work. They do not negotiate, advocate for coverage, or represent the insured where state law reserves that role for licensed professionals.
Members work so that the policyholder receives the full benefit of the policy and the contractor is paid for the full scope of the repair. Carrier adjusters are treated as professional counterparts.
Members disclose who they are, whom they work for, and how they are paid to the contractor, the policyholder, and the carrier.
Members maintain their competence through continuing education and cooperate with the association’s standards and complaint process.
State law sets the line between documenting a claim and adjusting one. NAIS members know that line in every state they work in.
The summary below reflects guidance state insurance regulators have issued to contractors. It is a general framework. Members are responsible for the specific rules of each state in which they practice.
State insurance departments have taken enforcement action against contractors and their representatives for negotiating claims without a public adjuster license. A clear professional standard protects members, contractors, and the homeowner.
